Fitting the Electric Sunroof Into My Astra

I had a friend who was just about to break a Cavalier GSi, one quick phone call later and I had managed to do a deal on the sunroof in his car.

They are electric in the Cavalier GSi and a few other models too, but all of the Astra's are wind open items. Luckily if I use the motor, the surrounding trim and the switch it will all fit straight into my Mk3 Astra and look like it was fitted there by Vauxhall themselves.

I had to be sure when removing the sunroof that it was in the fully closed position. Luckily for me it was, but if it wasn't I would have needed to connect some power to the sunroof wires by using the battery charger in my garage and then press the switch to close it.

It is quite easy to fit the sunroof and the whole job took me less than one hour.

The parts I needed were taken from the Cavalier GSi here is a picture of them from the top and bottom.

When I started to dismantle my manual sunroof I had to make sure it was in the fully Closed Position.

I Removed the Interior light by gently prising it out using a flat screwdriver. I could then see two screws that were positioned behind the light, these help to hold the plastic trim onto the car together with the single screw that is positioned in the centre of the winding handle, I removed all three screws and took the trim off. 2.jpg (14769 bytes)Removed Light
Now its time to remove the manual mechanism, this is held in by just two screws,  3.jpg (21743 bytes)Cover Removed
Thats all he parts removed, now its time to start putting it back together, the two screws that I had just taken out that held the winder mechanism in place are just a little too short to go back in, the screws from the Cav GSi are needed, Unfortunatley I didn't source these at the time, so I need to go to Vauxhall and buy them before I can continue. 4.jpg (21691 bytes)All Parts Removed
The screws are too short because the Electric Motor Mechanism is thicker than the manual one, also, the locating lugs are wider apart, but for some unknown reason, Vauxhall made the Astra with the wider spaced holes already there so no drilling and tapping is needed. thats just saved 40 minutes.
I Mounted the mechanism into position and secured it with the two mounting screws, there is a third mounting lug at the rear but because there is nowhere to mount it to, I  left it unused, the two screws are enough to keep it held tight.
More Info shortly, just need them two little screws first.....Keep checking Back, Bren 8-7-02
I Replaced the interior light back into its position and slid the little square plastic trim onto the larger panel, then tested it all again, sunroof open close, tilt, and interior light on, off, with switch and also by opening the doors. sunroof.jpg (28171 bytes)Finished Result
